Cemetery Development

TGMS offers an extensive range of services to support Cemetery Managers from inception of a cemetery development project through to practical completion including:
  •  Feasibility studies
  •  Risk assessments
  •  Liaison with the Environment Agency (SEPA for Scotland)
  •  Surveying (topographic, soil and asset)
  •  Conceptual designs Production of detailed designs, technical specifications, bills of quantities and construction drawings
  •  Contract administration
  •  Project management

We normally structure our service into discrete stages, although we are entirely flexible depending on our Client's requirements:

Stage 1 - Site survey, feasibility study, risk assessment and liaison with the Environment Agency

The overall aim of this stage is to provide the Client with sufficient information such that the viability of the proposed development can be assessed, and a detailed project plan can be developed.  Stage 1 normally comprises a Tier 1 risk assessment (in collaboration with Peter Mitchell Associates), a topographic survey, geophysical (soil) survey, site technical appraisal (excavation of test pits, removal of soil samples for laboratory analysis etc), production of outline development/construction options to mitigate risk to the environment, and liaison with the Environment Agency (EA).

For sites considered against EA criteria to be of intermediate or high risk to the environment, more detailed investigative work will be conducted to conform to the requirements of Tier 2 or Tier 3 risk assessments.  This may include the installation dipwells to facilitate the monitoring of groundwater over an extended period.

Stage 2 - Conceptual and detailed designs

Taking into account all of the information gathered during Stage 1, and in consultation with the Client, the aim of this stage is develop a conceptual design which will form the basis for producing a set of detailed designs, specifications, bills of quantities and construction drawings for the project.

The resulting detailed design and specification will be scientifically sound in terms of addressing the specific issues prevailing at the site, and will provide the basis for the production of tender documentation for potential contractors.

Stage 3 - Managing the tender process

Depending on the Client's requirements, TGMS are able to produce all of the necessary documentation required for the tender process.  Once the tender period closes, we can provide an analysis of the tender returns based on quality, capacity track-record and cost, in order to appoint a contractor.

Stage 4 - Project management and contract administration

During the construction period, it is crucial that the project is managed rigorously in order to avoid the efficacy of the remediation or construction works being compromised by factors such as the use of inappropriate or hydraulically incompatible materials (very common), use of machinery in unsuitable conditions (causing soil compaction and smear) and deviation from the specifications. TGMS undertake regular site visits during the construction phase to ensure that the requisite quality is achieved.
